Special Clothing for Jewish Men
There are special items of clothing that Jewish men wear to identify them as Jewish people. These items have a religious significance and are usually worn on special events like weddings or special feasts. Judaism encompasses all aspects of a Jew’s life and this includes clothing. Here are some of the articles that set Jewish men apart from others as Jewish people.
The Tzitzit or fringes worn at the corners of garments is meant as a reminder of the commandments of God. As described in Numbers 15: 38-40, the tzitzit should be made of thread dyed in blue or purple. However, since the kind of dye prescribed in the commandments is no longer known, modern day tzitzit are white. The tying of the tzitzit is accompanied by a complex procedure that has a lot of religious meaning. Since the tzitzit is supposed to be tied to four-cornered garments worn in biblical times, it is no longer relevant in this day and age. In its place, Jewish men wear a Tallit which is a four-cornered shawl with tzitzit on its corners during services.
Famous Jewish People in Modern Times
Many are familiar with famous Jewish people in ancient history, but mainly from a religious perspective. Jewish people, however, have also figured prominently in modern times and influenced current developments, especially in science and the arts.
Albert Einsten – Born in 1879, Einstein is most famous for his Special Theory of Relativity. It challenged the Newtonian concepts of space and time and established the now famous relationship between mass and energy. Einstein’s work covered ground-breaking findings in theoretical physics, quantum theory, statistical mechanics and electromagnetics. For the latter, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921 for showing, almost 20 years earlier, that light behaves like particles.
Jewish Organizations Reflect Ethnic Divisions of the Jewish People
Among the Jewish people there are distinct communities based on ethnic divisions which have given rise to several Jewish organizations. Geography and the dispersal of Jews all over the world resulted in communities influenced by their natural, cultural and political environments. This can be seen by differences in language, food, rituals and religious practices of Jewish communities.
In history, the Jewish people are divided into two major groups: the Ashkenazim and the Sephardim. The Ashkenazim or “Germanic” and Sephardim or “Hispanic” groups were followed by the Mizrahim or “Eastern” Jews as a third major group. There are other smaller groups like the Georgian Jews, Mountain Jews, Romaniotes, Teimanim and African Jews although many of these are now extinct. Different Jewish organizations have sprung up through the years to represent the interests of Jews belonging to one group or the other.

Jews occupy a special place in the world as shown by the number of famous Jewish people one encounters in studying history. The Judaeo-Christian belief of millions of people around the world makes them familiar with many Jewish characters. While the majority of famous Jewish people are associated with religion, many figure prominently in science and the arts. Here are some of the most important ones.
Abraham – The founding father of the Jewish people, Abraham’s historical importance spreads across cultures and faiths as the central figure in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Believed to have lived around 1500 B.C., Abraham is credited with establishing monotheism as a belief and rejecting the worship of idols. In Islam, Abraham is a friend of Allah and an ancestor of the prophet Muhammad. He is said to have built a shrine in Mecca where millions of Muslim pilgrims perform religious ceremonies every year during the Hajj.
